The Boston Celtics 2021 offseason has seen its fair share of scrutiny among those who find it excellent and a dud alike, with ESPN senior writer Kevin Pelton now joining the fray in his new league-wide assessment of offseason action.

Pelton may not be as wowed as some of the Celtics faithful, but he does see Boston’s offseason maneuvers as a strong play to improve the team from the front office down to the two way players. The ESPN analyst takes into account the walls constructed intentionally or not by current team president Brad Stevens’ predecessor Danny Ainge and is supportive of what Stevens did in those confines.

“Given limited flexibility entering the offseason, new Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens did well to reshuffle the lineup around All-Stars Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum,” writes Pelton.

“That started with an early trade sending Kemba Walker to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Al Horford,” he added, referencing the move that kicked the team’s offseason off in earnest. “Boston filled the void at point guard with a one-year, $5.9 million deal for Dennis Schroder,” perhaps a bit of luck but still an excellent signing nonetheless.

“I was more surprised the Celtics bet on a bounceback season for Josh Richardson, taking him into their remaining trade exception and extending his contract,” wrote Pelton on one of the team’s more polarizing moves, with many not seeing the bounce-back potential in the wing.

“But Boston was able to generate another big exception by signing-and-trading Evan Fournier to the New York Knicks,” he explained, “and would no longer have had cap space next summer after extending potential starters Marcus Smart and Robert Williams.”

And while you might have to grade what Boston did relative to their peers in the NBA’s Eastern Conference in a harsher light, we tend to agree that the Celtics did about as well as could reasonably be hoped under the brand-new Stevens regime, more than worthy of Pelton’s B+ assessment in our opinion.
