As stated previously, the Chicago Bulls had arguably the most polarizing offseason in the NBA.

In free agency, the Bulls signed Lonzo Ball, DeMar DeRozan, and Alex Caruso, while also trading Lauri Markkanen in a three-team deal, which sent Derrick Jones Jr. to Chicago from Portland.

The Athletic’s David Aldridge recently ranked Chicago’s offseason as No. 4 in the NBA while ESPN’s Zach Lowe called the Bulls the ‘biggest gambler’ in free agency and ESPN’s Kevin Pelton called DeMar DeRozan’s contract the worst value.

On Monday, Kevin Pelton gave the Bulls’ offseason a grade of C+.

Check out Pelton’s reasoning below.

“I liked much of Chicago’s offseason. I think a four-year, $82.5 million deal for restricted free agent Lonzo Ball (via sign-and-trade) will age well as Ball enters his prime, and the Bulls got a protected first-round pick and a lotto ticket in Derrick Jones Jr. for Lauri Markkanen’s rights in another sign-and-trade.”

The Lonzo Ball signing seems to be universally liked across the league. Ball had his best overall season of his career last season in New Orleans, with a career-high in scoring (14.6 ppg) and a career-high from 3-point range (37.8%). https://twitter.com/LonzoWire/status/1431255208613588993?s=20

“The third Chicago sign-and-trade, adding DeMar DeRozan on a three-year, $82 million deal, hurts the Bulls’ overall grade. Not only did they pay DeRozan far more than anyone else could have offered, they gave up a first-round pick and valuable reserve Thaddeus Young for the privilege.”

The amount that the Bulls paid DeRozan was definitely questionable, especially after trading for Nikola Vucevic last season and still missing the playoffs. And yet, the fans in Chicago aren’t going to wait for success to return the United Center sooner rather than later, as Pelton closed with. “Chicago needs to make the playoffs to justify dealing for veterans DeRozan and Nikola Vucevic while overcoming what projects as one of the league’s weakest defenses to do it.”
