Karl-Anthony Towns reacted to the dismissal of Minnesota Timberwolves president of basketball operations Gersson Rosas in the most modern way possible.

On Twitter, with a three-letter acronym: “wtf…”

The Timberwolves star was just as stunned as everyone else.

Just days before NBA training camps open and just days after Rosas posted photos of himself, players and Minnesota coach Chris Finch on Instagram, the Timberwolves fired him.

“Today, the Minnesota Timberwolves parted ways with President of Basketball Operations Gersson Rosas,” the team said in a news release. “As an organization, we remain committed to building a winning team that our fans and city can be proud of.”

Rosas had the position since May of 2019.

The team plans to promote executive vice president of basketball operations Sachin Gupta to interim president of basketball ops, according to ESPN.

The timing is odd. Why now just before the season, and if Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor, who remains controlling partner as he sells the team in 20% increments to Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore, wasn’t a fan of Rosas, why did he let him make personnel decisions at the draft and during free agency.

Taylor wasn’t a huge Rosas supporter but was convinced by business-side operations to hire Rosas, a person familiar with Timberwolves told USA TODAY Sports. The person requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the team’s operations.

Minnesota has struggled to find stability as organization – from the front office to coaches to players. Since losing in the 2004 Western Conference finals, they have had two winning seasons and one playoff appearance. They have had 11 coaches in the past 17 seasons.

The Timberwolves have also failed to capitalize on Towns’ talent. After making the playoffs in 2018, they have lost 46, 45 and 49 games.
