The 2021-22 NBA season started with a bang as the Los Angeles Lakers took on the Golden State Warriors in a primetime showdown Tuesday.

For the Lakers, the game marked the official debut of Russell Westbrook alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

For the Warriors, though Klay Thompson didn’t play, Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and rising third-year guard Jordan Poole highlighted the key figures from the contest.

The game ended with the Warriors winning, 121-114, and it certainly lived up to the hype between two likely playoff teams.

The ratings from the game on TNT demonstrated that, via Bill Shea of The Athletic:

The NBA opened its 75th season on Tuesday with a marquee double-header on TNT. The Nets-Bucks averaged 2.16M viewers, which the lowest opener audience since 2.05M for Rockets-Lakers in 2007, per Sports Media Watch. In the late game, the Warriors-Lakers averaged 3.39M viewers — up from 2020’s December opener that averaged 3.08M but down from Lakers-Clippers (3.58M) in October 2019.

Golden State and Los Angeles are two of the biggest markets in the league, so it’s not surprising the match drew high ratings because that also happened in the play-in tournament last year on ESPN when both teams squared off.

The Lakers have 42 out of 82 games nationally televised, so there will likely be more strong ratings for L.A. in the future.
