The Knicks and Nets both have head coaches under contract. So they don’t have to deal with the stress of a coaching search. But the current coaching carousel is still relevant to both New York and Brooklyn.

Milwaukee’s decision, for one, will impact the local teams.

Both the Knicks and Nets want to grow into perennial contenders in the Eastern Conference. They will be competing with Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks to get there. So it’s worth noting that, as of earlier this week, Nick Nurse’s candidacy had strong support within the organization. Though not all key stakeholders in Milwaukee were aligned on Nurse, per SNY sources.

Nurse, who was fired by Toronto four years after coaching them to an NBA title, is reportedly a candidate for the Suns opening as well.

The Suns, according to reports, have interest in Clippers head coach Ty Lue. But multiple people with knowledge of current coaching searches expect Lue to remain with the Clippers and not be a viable option for any current openings. Lue is currently under contract with the Clippers. Sources confirm that Suns associate head coach Kevin Young has impressed during his interview process.

Another coaching note: Detroit had done some background research on Jerry Stackhouse as part of its coaching search, per SNY sources. But several reports stated that Charles Lee and Kevin Ollie are finalists for the job. So Stackhouse, a former Piston and currently the head coach at Vanderbilt, is seemingly not a current candidate for Detroit.

The Pistons hire is relevant for the Knicks to a degree. New York owns Detroit’s 2024 first-round pick (*protections for the pick explained below).

The Knicks also own Milwaukee’s 2025 first-round pick if it falls outside of the top four.

*The Knicks will get the Pistons’ first-rounder in 2024 if it falls outside of No. 1 to No. 18.

If the pick doesn’t convey in 2024, the Knicks get the pick in 2025 if it falls outside of No. 1 – No. 13; if the pick doesn’t convey in 2025, the Knicks get the pick in 2026 if it falls outside No. 1 to No. 11; if the pick doesn’t convey in 2026, the Knicks get the Pistons’ 2027 first-rounder if it falls outside of No. 1 – No. 9.

If the first-round pick doesn’t convey in 2027, Detroit will send New York its 2027 second-round pick.
