New York Knicks forward Kevin Knox

New York Knicks forward Kevin Knox

The Knicks have two more games left on their preseason schedule, including Wednesday’s tilt with the Detroit Pistons at The Garden, before tipping off their regular season against the Boston Celtics next Wednesday.

While most of the team’s lingering questions regarding the roster have been answered, there’s still some mystery to how exactly Kevin Knox fits into the mix heading into the final year of his rookie contract.

On the Season 2 premiere of The Putback, SNY NBA Insider Ian Begley noted something that he previously reported at the start of training camp, that the Knicks had been looking at free agents who play the same spot as Knox, even after the 15-man roster was theoretically filled.

“Kevin Knox is also a player I’ve been watching because late in the offseason the Knicks had been talking to a couple of free agents at Knox’s position,” said Begley. “So, they were kind recruiting over Knox, maybe in a sense. Maybe they weren’t but that’s what it seems like when you’re talking to those kinds of free agents.

“So, I don’t know where Knox fits in with Tom Thibodeau this year, in Year Two, but he’s coming up on an important year in his career and the Knicks are coming up on a decision that they’d have to make with Knox, whether they want to keep him beyond his first contract or do something else.”

Knox played a career-low 11.0 minutes per game during his first season under Thibodeau. While his 39.3 percent three-point percentage was the best of his young career, Knox failed to find his way in the rotation, averaging just 3.9 points per game in 42 games.
