Anthony Davis knows the Los Angeles Lakers must step it up if the team hopes to win a championship this season. Davis tore into the team following Friday’s 107-83 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, saying the Lakers don’t have what it takes to win a championship right now.

Davis didn’t mince words when talking about the team’s performance, according to ESPN.

“We sucked,” Davis said when asked about the third. “No defense. Can’t score. That’s not just this third quarter, it’s every third quarter we’ve played this season. We come out slow, lackadaisical offensively and defensively. We got to get it together. Why? I can’t tell you. But we got to do a better job.”

“We got to decide who we want to be. A championship team? That’s not us right now,” Davis said. “We’re not winning a championship the way we’re playing. We got to be better, and we got to care more for our wins at home. Wins in general. That was embarrassing.”

The Lakers actually led 49-44 at halftime, but things quickly got out of hand in the third quarter. The Lakers were outscored 40-12 during the quarter.

Davis wasn’t the reason the team struggled. He led the Lakers with 22 points. Russell Westbrook wasn’t far behind, scoring 20 points. Minnesota’s Karl-Anthony Towns led all scorers with 29 points. D’Angelo Russell was the only other player on Minnesota to finish with more than 20 points.

Lakers struggling without LeBron James

Davis and Westbrook are carrying a bigger load for the Lakers with LeBron James out. James missed the last five games due to an abdominal injury. The issue is not believed to be serious, and James is expected back soon. The team is 2-3 without James.

Thirteen games into the season, the Lakers’ record sits at 7-6. The team currently sits in seventh place in the Western Conference.
