Philadelphia 76ers guard Matisse Thybule is known for being one of the league’s best defensive players. The third-year guard out of Washington is a menace on that end and in Saturday’s win over the Atlanta Hawks, he had four steals and three blocks to give the team a big spark.
However, the focus still remains on his offense in terms of being able to improve. Thybulle is so athletic and he is a guy who can get out and run which should be an advantage for him.
He had 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting on Saturday and he knocked down one of his triples. For him to truly take the next step forward in this league, he has got to add something to this team on the offensive end. He will then become one of the better two-way players in the league if he can add on offense.
“At this point, it’s just a confidence thing,” said Thybulle. “These guys continue to have my back and support me and encourage me to step outside of my comfort zone a little bit and just continue to make plays offensively. Doc (Rivers) has been really, really supportive of that as well and ultimately just continuing to do the work on my own time so I can translate onto the court come game time.”
Rivers has been preaching to Thybulle about driving to the basket and using his speed and athleticism to get all the way there. That is something that not only Rivers has been preaching to him, but guys like Tobias Harris as well.
“Offensively, he was just able to see some gaps in the defense and be able to get to the rim,” Harris added. “That aggressiveness is what he’s continuing to find and what we need from him as well.”
For Thybulle, he has to continue taking these steps forward and become a more complete all-around player. He has got to be able to grow on the offensive end and if he can do it, that will go a long way for both himself and the Sixers as a team.
