The Ben Simmons vs. Philadelphia 76ers saga took another turn on Thursday as the team continued training camp ahead of the 2021-22 season.

After Simmons reportedly said his partnership with Joel Embiid has run its course despite all of the success the two experienced together, the big fella shot back at Simmons after practice. It made sense for Embiid to get defensive given everything the two have been through combined with the fact Simmons refuses to work on his game.

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith reacted to Embiid’s comments, and he sided with the big fella on this one:

I’m not saying they’re casting any aspersions on him outside of Joel Embiid or whatever because they want him back, but the flip side to it is that there are people that are sitting back and going like this ‘The nerve of you. You don’t show up. You don’t work on your jump shot. You don’t work on your free throws, and you’re the victim?’ That’s not how sports works. You’re a victim when you do the job and you’re not appreciated for the job that you do. Not when you’re greatly appreciated, and people give you a pass on a lot of things, but somehow, someway you don’t produce and it’s other people’s fault. That’s what no one’s hearing from Ben Simmons. You shot 33/34% from the free-throw line. Shaq! Shaquille O’Neal shot free throws better than you. Wilt Chamberlain shot free throws better than you. Dennis Rodman shot free throws better than you. I mean this is all-time epic futility. So Joel Embiid is like, ‘What the hell is going on here? I’m hearing about, you don’t want to play with me? What?’

This situation does not look like it will end any time soon and the Sixers have to figure out what to do next. They either move Simmons or they keep him on the roster and continue to punish him as they did on Friday. Either way, there will be awkward moments along the way and the Sixers must do some damage control to move forward.
