Toronto Raptors rookie Scottie Barnes has emerged this season as one of the top rookie players, and the fourth overall pick recently earned some praise from Brooklyn Nets head coach Steve Nash.

Barnes is averaging 16.6 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.1 steals in nine games. He leads all rookies in scoring average and rebounds, and is second in double-doubles. He recently became the second rookie in franchise history to record 100 points through his first six games.

The Nets held Barnes to a season-low eight points on Sunday in a 116-103 win over the Raptors. However, Barnes was also able to register seven rebounds, five steals and four assists.

Prior to the game, Nash explained why Barnes has been so successful.

He definitely has a lot of confidence and belief in what he does. He can impact the game in a lot of ways. Offensively, I think there is a player that has a high ceiling but is still going to continue to develop. Defensively, he is very versatile and can guard multiple positions, skillsets and actions. He is very effective. He is a very impressive rookie and to be this effective early is a huge part of why I think he’s so impressive.

Barnes has made a tremendous impact in a short time frame and constantly validates the Raptors’ decision to take him with the fourth pick. He is a big reason why Toronto has gotten off to a 6-5 start this season, something that is a bit rare for a rookie.

He has drawn high praise from several coaches and players around the league, and that should only escalate as he continues to play more and develop with the Raptors.
