Noel has been dealing with a sore left knee and there was the possibility he wouldn’t be able to play. However, Gibson is dealing with a personal situation, with Thibs saying it’s “good personal reasons.”
The Knicks still have Mitchell Robinson, who hasn’t played in a regular season since March, will get the start down low. He played 27 minutes in the final preseason game against the Washington Wizards, scoring six points with nine rebounds and two steals on his stat line.
When Robinson needs a water break, though, Thibodeau will likely deploy his smaller but gritty front court of Julius Randle and Obi Toppin. Both players aren’t seven foot, but they offer good jumping ability and solid defense. Knicks fans watching preseason games have seen this “small ball” out on the court, and Thibs seems to like deploying it.
The Knicks tip off against the Celtics at Madison Square Garden at 7:30 p.m.
