The Boston Celtics made their 2021-22 preseason debut on Monday night in a 98-97 win over the Orlando Magic. Celtics forward Jaylen Brown led the offense with 25 points and four rebounds in the win, including 16 points in the first quarter. After the win, Brown, who missed the end of last season due to wrist surgery, told reporters it was just nice to get back out there.

“It was fun. I haven’t been on the court in a while so just getting out there in front of the home crowd, it felt great,” Brown said. “The playoffs was really hard for me to watch, but I’m back, I feel great and ready to play some good basketball.”

Brown missed the final seven regular-season games and all five playoff games due to injury last year.

Brown’s new perspective

The time off the court gave him the opportunity to get a new perspective on the game by watching, he said.

“The game, when you forced to watch it, you forced to look at it from different angles so the game just looks different for me now in a sense,” Brown said “… now that I’m back the game definitely feels different, but in a good way.”

Focused on defense

Brown is entering his sixth NBA season and figures to build on an All-Star caliber season from last year. Even though he was a near 25 points-per-game scorer last year, Brown said his focus lays on the defensive side of the ball.

“I’m all focused on defense,” Brown said. “I think offensively shots, all that stuff will take care of itself. We got a lot of crafty guys who can run with good pace to get that ball moving.”
