Kerr explains why celebration after Steph’s game-winner so profound originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

On the surface, the Warriors‘ win over the Houston Rockets on Friday night wouldn’t have been cause for too much celebration, even though it ended with Steph Curry‘s first game-winning buzzer-beater. Houston has one of the NBA’s worst records and even with Klay Thompson and Draymond Green not available, this should have been an easy win for the Warriors.

Head coach Steve Kerr opened up about the profound celebration after the victory, and explained why the Warriors seemed extra excited for a regular-season win in January.

“God damn right we are,” Kerr exclaimed after NBC Sports Bay Area’s Monte Poole asked about the postgame joviality. “I make of that that it has been a real struggle the last couple of weeks and it hasn’t been fun, it’s no fun losing. We’ve just had some adversity and we haven’t handled it very well. We just haven’t brought the requisite energy and force that it takes to win when you’re under siege, and that’s why that was what tonight was about.

“Recognizing that, doing something about it, falling down early, playing terribly but sticking with it, and so that celebration was as much relief as anything, but warranted because we’ve been in a tough stretch.”

Kerr and the Warriors have tailed off after a torrid start to the season. Golden State is 6-7 since that primetime win over the Phoenix Suns on Christmas Day.

Steph Curry has been working through a shooting slump, one of the worst of his historic NBA career. Klay Thompson still is getting himself back into a full slate of minutes, and Draymond Green has been battling a back issue that has kept him out for a number of games.

Such a thrilling finish and a buzzer-beater like that from Curry at home might be the salve that gets the Warriors back on track. They’ll look to build on that momentum Sunday when the Utah Jazz roll into Chase Center.
