The Blackhawks and Golden Knights have agreed to a trade that will send 2020-21 Vezina Trophy winner Marc-Andre Fleury to Chicago according to ESPN’s Emily Kaplan. The Golden Knights will receive minor-league forward Mikael Hakkarainen in the trade.

Despite the deal reportedly being agreed upon, Fleury’s agent, Allan Walsh, tweeted that he hadn’t been told that Fleury is being dealt.

“While Marc-Andre Fleury still hasn’t heard from anybody with the Vegas Golden Knights, he has apparently been traded to Chicago,” Allan said on Twitter. “Marc-Andre will be taking time to discuss his situation with his family and seriously evaluate his hockey future at this time.”

Kaplan also reported that there was talk that Fleury may choose to retire if he was traded out of Vegas.

Fleury is coming off a season in which he went 26-10-0 with a 1.98 goals-against-average and a career-high .928 save percentage. He helped lead the Golden Knights to the second-best record in the NHL and another deep playoff run before losing to the Montreal Canadiens.

This marks the first time since 2011 that the reigning Vezina Trophy winner was traded prior to the start of the following season. In 2001, the Buffalo Sabres traded Dominik Hasek to the Detroit Red Wings on the opening day of free agency.

The Blackhawks are undergoing a changing of the guard in net. Prior to the 2021 season, the team chose not to re-sign veteran goalie Corey Crawford. Chicago elected to go with a trio of Collin Delia, Kevin Lankinen, and Malcolm Subban in net.

Chicago has made quite a splash so far this offseason. The team traded for former Columbus Blue Jackets star defenseman Seth Jones last week and signed him to an eight-year contract extension.
