The Rangers placed Adam Fox on IR on Friday, a day after he suffered an upper-body injury against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

After Thursday’s game, head coach Gerard Gallant said Fox was day-to-day, and that he was sure the injury wasn’t serious.

With Fox on IR, he will miss at least the next three games, which will mean the Rangers won’t have him against the Minnesota Wild on Friday, the Seattle Kraken on Sunday, or the Florida Panthers this coming Tuesday.

But because of the All-Star break and what was to be the Olympic break, the Rangers are off from Feb. 2 to Feb. 14, meaning Fox — if his injury is as minor as Gallant suggested — should be able to return against the Boston Bruins on Feb. 15 after missing the minimum three games.

Fox suffered his injury In the first minute of the third period on Thursday, when he was checked into the boards by Blue Jackets defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov.

It wasn’t a very ferocious hit, but Fox was pinned against the boards for a few seconds, perhaps impacting him awkwardly. He skated off the ice on his own power and did not return.

In 44 games this season, Fox has seven goals and 40 assists. His 47 points are the most of any defenseman in the NHL, two ahead of Victor Hedman of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Fox has already tied his career high in points, which he set in 55 games last season when he won the Norris Trophy.
