This was supposed to be the first week of the Olympic break but the NHL is not going as they had to re-schedule 95 games over this week and next due to COVID running rampant through the NHL in December and early January.

The players are upset that they were unable to go to Beijing but there was no real alternative once the league started postponing games.

Hopefully the NHL and the players will be in Italy in 2026 for the next Winter Olympiad.

Don’t forget that starting Monday, there will no longer be taxi squads in the NHL as the league decided to help out teams only until the All-Star break.

The column will still be updated if need be, on Sunday evening before the start of a new week if there are any more postponements.

Chris Tanev has always been more than solid on the blueline and had two goals and 10 points heading into action on Wednesday when he had a career game with a goal and three assists in a 4-2 win over the Coyotes…Andrew Mangiapane got off to a great start with 15 goals in his first 19 games but had slumped with only four goals in his next 21 games before picking up his 20th of the season Tuesday…Johnny Gaudreau is tied for sixth in NHL scoring with 54 points in 42 games and is third in the NHL in plus/minus with a plus-30…This is a good season to be having a great year as the 28-year-old is in the final year of his long-term contract and is a pending UFA.

The Hurricanes play all four games on the road, including three games in four nights…Frederik Andersen should get three starts in goal with Antti Raanta playing once…Andrei Svechnikov scored the winner Sunday in a 2-1victory over San Jose…It has been a nice comeback of sorts for Svechnikov as the 21-year-old had a bit of a slump last season with 15 goals and 42 points in 55 games but has returned to form this season with 16 goals and 38 points in 39 games…Nino Niederreiter has quietly become the Hurricanes third leading goal scorer with 13, including three in his last six games…Derek Stepan has fulfilled a nice role as a fourth-line center and has started to score a bit of late with six goals and 13 points in 34 games to date.

CHICAGO

Notes

The Blackhawks have been a big disappointment this season as many thought the acquisitions of Marc-Andre Fleury and Seth Jones as well as the return to the lineup of Jonathan Toews who missed all of last season with an illness, would propel them into a playoff spot but that has not been the case and they are wallowing in seventh in the Central…Jones will remain as their top star on the blueline but Fleury could be dealt by the trade deadline and it looks like Toews is just a shadow of his former self…Alex DeBrincat has 26 goals, 14 better than second place Brandon HagelDylan Strome has been coming on of late with four goals and eight points in his last seven games.

I know he is a playmaker (27 assists) but his previous worst is nine goals, set in his rookie season and last year when he played only 53 games…Elvis Merzlikins has given up 13 goals in his last two games. He was actually good on Jan. 26, despite giving up six goals as he made 56 saves but he was terrible on Monday, giving up seven goals on 25 shots before being pulled after two periods of play against Florida.

He had 17 goals and 45 points in 51 games last season but has taken his game to another level this season…Playing alongside veteran Joe Pavelski doesn’t hurt as Pavelski has seemed to be reinvigorated by playing with the youngster…Pavelski has 19 goals and 48 points in 43 games despite being held off the scoresheet in his last three contests.
