Portland Thorns and Seattle Reign make NWSL history originally appeared on NBC Sports Northwest

It was a full day of soccer in the Emerald City on Sunday, marking the first-ever OL Reign-Sounders double-header vs. the Portland Thorns and Timbers.

It proved once again that the Pacific Northwest is a perfect match for elite soccer play and fan attendance.

The Portland Thorns squared off against OL Reign in front of a crowd of more than 27,000 fans, setting a new NWSL attendance record.

It was a day to remember, but unfortunately for the Thorns, it was a special performance from Megan Rapinoe as Portland went to Seattle and lost for the first time in its last 11 games.

Thanks to Rapinoe’s two goal brace, the Reign defeated the Thorns, 2-1.

The women’s teams battled it out in a special NWSL-MLS doubleheader before the Timbers and the Sounders faced each other at Lumen Field.

Rapinoe loved the historic crowd in Seattle.

“I think my personality just demands a lot of people,” Rapinoe said postgame. “So, the more the better, and to get that extra boost in a big rivalry, I think it was great for the team to be able to experience playing in a huge stadium and get that energy.”

Rapinoe scored the opening goal in the 16th minute. She scored again on a penalty kick in the 40th minute.

Portland was playing its fifth game in 16 days.

Following the loss, Thorns head coach Mark Parsons discussed the challenge of such a large crowd, saying “it was just tough with the atmosphere and the players were struggling to talk to one another at times.”

The Thorns will now have a full week of rest before hosting the Washington Spirit at Providence Park Saturday, Sept. 4 at 7:30p.m. PT.
