NASHVILLE — Brenden Aaronson scored the most important goal of his young career with the U.S. men’s national team. But in the same manner the USMNT took the lead against Canada in the 55th minute, it lost it in the 61st minute.

The battle between the U.S. and Canada ended in a 1-1 draw at Nissan Stadium on Sunday in the first 2022 World Cup qualifier played on American soil for this cycle.

Both nations have two draws in two matches in Concacaf qualifying, a disappointing result for a U.S. team vying to return to the World Cup after missing the 2018 tournament.

Aaronson tapped in Antonee Robinson’s low cross from the left to break the scoring deadlock. Six minutes later, Alphonso Davies beat DeAndre Yedlin to the ball, sprinted downfield and passed the ball across goal to center forward Cyle Larin for the equalizer.

Here are a few observations from the Concacaf World Cup qualifier in Nashville:

Brenden Aaronson scores for the USMNT

The U.S. goal sequence started with Christian Pulsic holding up the ball in midfield. He fought off Canadian opposition, passed the ball ahead to Kellyn Acosta, who played a lead pass to the sprinting Robinson, who assisted to Aaronson.

Aaronson has scored four goals for the U.S. But the three previous goals for the 20-year-old were scored in friendlies.

Cyle Larin equalizes for Canada

Yedlin tried to hold off the speedy Davies down the left side as the Canadians’ counter attack ensued. U.S. center back Miles Robinson ran to Davies to block his pass just 6 yards from goal. Davies’ pass split Yedlin and Robinson and found Larin for the tying goal.

USMNT vs. Honduras on Wednesday

The U.S. will travel to Honduras on Wednesday (10:30 p.m. ET) for its third and final qualifier of the September international window. Canada will return to BMO Field in Toronto to face El Salvador, which tied with the U.S. on Thursday.
